Taking an ATV trip may be fun and exciting; making sure your ATV is in good working condition before you go will aid assure it turns out that way. Off-road riding wears down the machine, which makes regular maintenance critical. You don’t want to end up stranded or hurt. The best thing you may do is to check your owner’s manual for guidelines specific to your vehicle. In general, you’ll want to look over the following things.

First, inspect your tires. Make sure they are at the necessary air pressure level, and that both sides are equal. Check for gouges and punctures; you don’t want to lose any air while you’re out riding. Look at the bearings and nuts on the actual wheels as well to make sure not one thing is loose or worn out. Test the steering; it will have to be tight and smooth.

Next test the brakes and shifter–make sure the pedals are adjusted to the rider. Try out the kill switch so you know it’s working. Check the throttle, and clean off the controls and cables. Make sure the lights (especially brake lights) are working as well. Walk around the vehicle and ascertain that all the parts and joints are fastened correctly and are clean. Last, but not least, make sure you have sufficient fuel and oil. You’ll also want to check the coolant level; you don’t want the machine overheating!

Get in the habit of washing and inspecting your ATV after each ride and looking it over before the next one. Taking a minute or two to make sure nothing’s faulty may save your life, not to mention your trip.

5A real thumb-saver!
By Judy E. Eckersley
This is the greatest little gizmo. My age group suffers from arthritis and the little throttle levers on ATV’s, jet skis, etc. can cause pain in the thumb joints if you ride for more than a few minutes. With the Thumb Assist, you transfer the pressure to the heel of your hand and you can ride for a long time without pain.
